CHAPTER FOURTEEN

All right, call me predictable, but I was still proud of the fact that I managed to resist the temptation to go see Luca until just after noon the next day. Ugh. Who was I kidding? I only waited that long so I could have my turn in the bathroom. No sense going over with no makeup on, again, especially since I was wearing my killer new sundress, albeit with a white cardigan in deference to the chilly temperatures still plaguing the island even as the daffodils began to sprout. I'd even taken the time to straighten my hair, a look Luca had never seen before since I'd first tried it after I'd moved to the city.

Then I had to stop by Jimmie's and take care of Patches, which had led to a mad hunt for a lint roller. But whatever. At least now I was on my way. And it was a respectable hour to pay a visit to a friend.

Was that what Luca had become? A friend? Is that what I wanted from him? Friendship? Something more? Had I finally forgiven him for breaking my heart on prom night? I actually had no idea. And that thought almost had me whipping a U-turn right smack in the middle of Main Street. The thought of a lecture from my mother about my reckless driving when we seemed to have reached some sort of understanding about my maturity level had me resisting the urge.

When I pulled into the driveway, I didn't see Luca's or Harry's cars. Hopefully, they were in the garage, and I hadn't procrastinated too long and missed them. I hurried up to the front door before I could change my mind then I rang the bell and waited. And waited. I looked around, cupped my hands, and tried to peek into the front window then rang the bell again. Still no answer.

Concern (okay, fine, curiosity, nosiness, whatever) warred with decorum. It seemed as if my hand reached for the door handle of its own accord, and when the door eased open, the battle raged on. Could I really go into Luca's house uninvited? No. Absolutely not. But what if something had happened to him? His wife had just been found dead after all. And Luca had supposedly gotten into a fight with a guy who was toward the top of the suspect list. Granted it was only my suspect list. Detective Barlow might well have a different opinion, but still. Plus, hadn't Harry said—was it only yesterday?—that he wasn't feeling well? What if something had happened to him, and he was lying on the floor needing help? Decorum didn't stand a chance.

I poked my head in the door. "Luca?"

Nothing.

"Harry?" The fact that the door was unlocked didn't set off any alarm bells. Old timers often didn't bother locking up, as if the world was still the same safe place it had been fifty or sixty years ago. Which also explained why so many people had a key to Jimmie's.
